On-line Critique Service
This is a great opportunity for painters who cannot commit their time to a weekly class, but would benefit greatly from the critique of an experienced instructor. A critique is a critical review of your work, touching on both the strength and weak points of the work. The goal being to sharpen one's visual "tools", and make your work stronger. A critique is a unique experience and a valuable tool to improve your work, at your convenience. The critique allows you broaden your artistic horizons and to gain perspective on your work. Some concrete examples of what to expect from this critique are:
The immediate visual impact; what works well, what needs resolution.
Patterns - what is the artist looking for/finding?
How clearly does the work read? Art is visual communication. I use the "tools" of value, temperature, and color saturation when looking at paintings.
How well does the subject fit to the size of the work? If the work is representational, how do forms relate to the size of the piece?
Depending on the artist's skill level, I often suggest specific exercises (ex. - small value drawings for an artist who needs more skill with seeing contrast), or color exercises for an artist who needs to broaden their personal color sense - (ex. - removing all greens from palette, have artist mix 4 warm and 4 cool greens from yellows and blues on palette).
I always suggest other artists work to look at, and provide links, and other helpful information. I think of the critique as a 3-4 hour class devoted to your work. To get the maximum possible benefit from the critique, be sure to send images of what you feel are your strongest efforts. Do not send poor quality images, or images of unfinished work. My expertise as an instructor is with 2D work only - images of paintings done in any color medium are fine to send, as are drawings.
